Our Story

​

What started out as a holiday turned into a passion and then became a mission. 

​

Sun Bears UK was founded in 2020 by Colin Hoare, following several journeys to Borneo, where the wonder of the rainforests and the species within them captured his heart. Colin and his wife Emma originally ventured to Sepilok in Borneo to see the orangutans but it was the sun bears that left the lasting impression. 

 

After studying zoology at university (and then ending up in IT), nature and the wonders within it have always been close to his heart. However, it wasn’t until experiencing the sun bears in their natural habitat and seeing the amazing work and effort that was going into saving them that he decided to take more of an active role. 

 

The UK is full of animal lovers but after speaking to anyone who would listen, it became apparent that there was a lack of people who knew about sun bears, let alone all that they are now facing. 

 

As a keystone species, saving them and the environment that they live in will also help save their entire ecosystem. Yes, we are here to save the sun bears but through that action we can save so much more. 

 

Sun Bears UK is in its early stages so we are actively looking for like minded people to help us. There are so many ways in which people can help, from volunteering their time to simply providing content for our social media campaigns. If you think you can help please reach out. Sun bears need our help and sadly there is no easy solution, but we strongly believe that it's not too late. Through education, fundraising and promotion, we can help make a real difference.
